MOSCA - La Russia ha deciso di sospendere l'installazione di missili tattici del tipo 'Iskander' nella propria enclave di Kaliningrad, decisa originariamente in funzione di contrasto all'espansione verso l'Est europeo del sistema nazionale americano di difesa anti-missilistica, il cosiddetto 'scudo': lo hanno dichiarato fonti dello stato maggiore interforze russo, che hanno peraltro preteso di rimanere anonime.

Le fonti hanno precisato che il cambio di programma da parte di Mosca è da ricollegarsi direttamente all'atteggiamento diverso assunto in proposito dalla nuova amministrazione Usa di Barack Obama. "L'attuazione dei piani per installare i missili 'Iskander'", hanno spiegato le fonti riservate, "è stata sospesa dal momento che la nuova amministrazione americana non sta procedendo con i suoi piani per dispiegare la terza fase del sistema di difesa anti-missilistica in Polonia e nella repubblica Ceca. La Russia", hanno sottolineato ancora le fonti, "non ha bisogno di schierare gli 'Iskander' nella regione di Kaliningrad, se gli Stati Uniti non installano le loro strutture anti-missilistiche in Europa orientale". Una decisione "positiva", che, se verrà confermata ufficialmente, rappresenterà un passo avanti importante, ha commentato l'ambasciatore americano alla Nato Kurt Volker.

All'agenzia Ria Novosti, però, un'altra fonte del ministero della Difesa russo ha precisato poco dopo che è troppo presto per fare dichiarazioni sul futuro dispiegamento di missili russi a Kaliningrad: "L'eventuale dispiegamento di missili Iskander per ora è semplicemente un piano dello stato maggiore delle forze armate russe e non un'azione concreta - fa notare la fonte - non sono stati fatti passi di alcun tipo per il dispiegamento".


Il Cremlino ha sempre considerato lo 'scudo' Usa come una minaccia diretta contro se stessa, e non contro gli 'Stati-canaglia' ufficialmente addotti da Washington quali obiettivi dell'iniziativa, che nella sua versione originaria prevede la creazione di batterie di missili intercettori sul territorio polacco, e di una stazione radar di primo avvistamento su quello ceco.

Kaliningrad, l'ex Koenigsberg di era prussiana, è un'enclave russa incuneata tra la stessa Polonia e la Lituania, ambedue Stati membri della Nato oltre che dell'Unione Europea.
